 University of Montreal and University of Lyon research study on origins of life in NatureÂ
Here's another argument against intelligent design. An evolutionary geneticist from the Université de Montréal, together with researchers from the French cities of Lyon and Montpellier, have published a ground-breaking study that characterizes the common ancestor of all life on earth, LUCA (Last Universal Common Ancestor). Their findings, presented in a recent issue of Nature, show that the 3.8-billion-year-old organism was not the creature usually imagined. |

The Army Corps of Engineers is mandated to provide New Orleans with an improved hurricane protection system by 2011. Virginia Tech geotechnical engineers are among the researchers analyzing the floodwall and levee systems, working with engineers from the U. S. Army Engineering Research and Development Center and from other universities. Advanced testing in Virginia Tech's geotechnical laboratory will determine the tests' cost effectiveness when applied to levee projects that entail hundreds of miles.

The failure of the New Orleans' levees after Hurricane Katrina struck the coastal city in 2005 is now labeled "the worst engineering disaster of the United States" by a professional organization that knows –– the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

Three major global climate-change projections scaled down to Oregon's Rogue River Basin point to hotter, drier summers with increasing wildfire risk, reduced snowpack and rainier, stormy winters, according to a report coordinated by the University of Oregon’s Climate Leadership Initiative and the National Center for Conservation Science & Policy.
Among the report's recommendations: a gradual relocation of structures and people from areas at most risk of flash flooding and wildfires and a call for governments, private firms and households to prioritize and cooperatively pursue strategies and policies to prepare for the changes. Â |
